Okeechobee
is located northwest of West Palm Beach near the Kissimmee River and Lake Okeechobee. It is known as the “Speckled Perch Capital of the World,” and also the “Gateway to South Florida.” Freshwater lakes are plentiful in this area where anglers come year round to catch bass, black crappie, catfish, as well as the famous speckled perch. Lake Okeechobee is the largest lake in Florida, and the second largest freshwater lake within the U.S., covering nearly half million acres. It is part of the “Okeechobee Waterway,” which runs from Fort Myers to Stuart on the east coast of Florida. Besides fishing, other lake activities such as boating, swimming, water skiing, hiking and wildlife watching are popular in Okeechobee. Each March, the town of Okeechobee holds a “Speckled Perch Festival & Arts and Crafts Fair,” and Labor Day is host to a three-day festival and rodeo. Okeechobee is a lovely community rich in history and cultural sites, including the Brighton Seminole Indian Reservation. South Central Florida ,near Lake Okeechobee has two seasons: rainy and dry, which brings about a natural cycle of flood and drought. The dry season usually starts in November and continues through May. Temperatures fall and humidity decreases during the dry season, making it a very pleasant time of year to visit Okeechobee, which is the second largest fresh water lake in the country. June through October is the rainy season, with high temperatures and equally high humidity. The average rainfall is 53 inches per year, although actual rainfall varies widely from year to year. This area is also not as exposed to the cooling ocean breezes in summertime as are places nearer the coastline.
